From June to September, sandspurry’s pink flowers blossom on sandy, rocky areas across Europe and North Africa. Sandspurry is able to thrive on such arid ground thanks to its long, tough root which grows deep down to find water and in doing so, helps to stabilise the soil. In North Africa, it is ground into a powder and mixed with olive oil to make an ointment used to reduce pigmentation marks. Sandspurry is also known as "stone‑breaker" as it is used in the medical field to treat kidney stones.
